Today is MLK Day...

Today is a federal holiday celebrating the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the United States. All US Post Offices are closed today in recognition of this holiday, so orders processed and "shipped" in our system today will be packed and labeled, but will not actually be physically shipped until tomorrow. UPS is still operating today, so larger items that go by UPS will ship as normal.

Eurosonic Upright Bass StringsThese strings are an alternative to more costly and problematic gut strings, that are developing a cult-like following with many jazz, rockabilly and bluegrass musicians. Their design is what sets them apart, rather than a solid core or steel coating... well, how about I let them tell you about it:

"First is the inner core which is a braided cord consisting of steel and silk. Silk is the key to the low tension, gut like tones and the steel adds tuning and intonation stability while adding the ability to work with magnetic pickups. This cord is then tightly wrapped with a blend of non-ferrous and noble metals (copper, nickel, zinc, tungsten, etc.). Finally, they are wrapped with a specially shaped and ground polymer with no color additives giving Eurosonic’s a unique, almost translucent look. Eurosonic Bass Strings have a gauge that is comparable to many old gut strings (new gut strings are MUCH thicker as they have not yet stretched)."

Bottom line, they are a nice alternative to gut, and have a thick attack and less pronounced sustain than some other strings. Their Polyamide (what?!?) wrap, whatever that is, makes for a gentle experience for both hands, and though bowing isn't great, it can be done.

If you play slap rockabilly, or prefer a very low tension string, choose the Ultralights. However, if you play classic jazz, or do a mix of all styles including slap, I'd recommend the Lights, as the Ultralight strings can be a little slack for normal clarity. The Mediums are a higher tension that may not be desirable given this string's basic design goal, but I also carry them for those that prefer a stiffer string with the vintage character of these unique strings.

String Gauges G D A E
Ultra Light Tension .065 inches, 1.65mm .088 inches, 2.25mm .100 inches, 2.55mm .130 inches, 3.30mm
Light Tension .069 inches, 1.75mm .094 inches, 2.40mm .110 inches, 2.80mm .142 inches, 3.60mm
Medium Tension .075 inches, 1.90mm .098 inches, 2.50mm .122 inches, 3.10mm .150 inches, 3.80mm

Color codes: Ultralight: yellow with red stripe at ball end, solid yellow with red band at headstock end; Light: yellow with aquamarine stripe at ball end, solid aquamarine at headstock end; Medium: yellow with black stripe at ball end, solid red with black band at headstock end.

  • low tension (Lights & Ultralights)
  • great for slap play
  • smooth "flatwound" feel
  • organic tone without gut string maintenance or cost

Corelli 370 Upright Bass Strings (and 360 Solo Gauge)

Corelli's versatile and articulate strings are easy on the hands (it's a reason why they're one of Bob's all-time favorites!) and they bow very well. Steel strings, with full, detailed sound. Medium, Forte, and Extra Forte Gauges Available; but read our note, as their gauges run kind of "thin" and "light" as compared to most of their contemporaries.

Innovation GoldenSlaps - 140GLP (Golden Slap) Low Tension Strings
Innovation GoldenSlaps - 140GLP (Golden Slap) Low Tension Strings

These are some of our most popular strings! The Innovation Golden Slap Strings are a "Hybrid" of sorts; a warm, dark gut-like tone, but with less tension - great for slapstyle Rockabilly and Psychobilly. They also have a nice, middling pizzicato tone; not too bright, with nice "thump" -- they're a favorite for those playing bluegrass. Identical to the "Silver Slaps" other than their color; also are basically a lighter, golden-colored version of the "Super Silver" strings.

Innovation Rockabilly REDS - 90140RR Med Tension Red Strings
Innovation Rockabilly REDS - 90140RR Med Tension Red Strings

Let's be honest, it takes a pretty special player to rock red strings. And these new strings from Innovation hold nothing back. Modeled after the Silver and Golden Slap sets, they make a big visual impression with their bold red windings -- which look particularly cool on a blonde bass! And to match their appearance, they have a gutsy, slap-friendly tone that really works in some of the more "brash" music styles. Special care went into their development to get the string balance "just right." No holds barred!

LaBella Supernil Upright Bass Strings

This item is made in USA!A popular string set in the bluegrass world for decades, these unusual strings have a big and fat, boomy sound, which can be a thumper's delight. The somewhat strangely textured solid D and G strings are their most instantly recognizable trait, which some people love (and some people don't). Some of our customers have told us what they think about this product.
Check out what they had to say!
Bob--I put the Eurosonics (I purchased sometime ago from you, just got around to installing them) on. Frankly I was afraid of the transition from steel strings, and as you told me "they don't look like they'll work but they will". You were right, they don't look like they work but they do.

Your help and honest real-world advice is very valuable and I join all the others in thanking you nearly everytime I deal with you.

I use a piezo-magnetic blend. It's good to see you now offer a magnetic pick-up (significantly cheaper than the one I have), I think blending with the two channel K+K preamp is the way to go. I play at rock band volume sometimes with a blues/roots rock band and I wouldn't want to do that with just a piezo. The two-channel pre-amp (mine's mounted behind the tailpiece) gives you the ability to plug in and play quickly when you're playing through backline. It's a pleasure to not have to fiddle with a bunch of cables and boxes when you want to get on and off quickly and easily.

Back to the Eurosonics, I bought them to try to get more rockabilly slap going but I have to say the combination of a magnetic/piezo and the Eurosonics is great even with straight pizz. You get a more traditional sound, the thump, the quicker decay, --and it's warmer and less "very-long-scale-fretless-electric" sounding. I'm not a latin player, but I tried a latin tune at a rehearsal and in my opinion this combination would kill for latin in the hands of the right player.

Bob, thanks so much for the speedy service and the expert opinions about my bass problems. I had an email saying my order had been shipped within 10 minutes of speaking with you, and it arrived in two days. You must have a postal jet on call!

I really like the Eurosonics for my bluegrass music. Yesterday, a friend who, unlike me is a good bluegrass bass player, came by and was really impressed with the sound of my bass. He said it's hard to find a bass that plays that easy and still has that much volume.

Thanks again for the advice and service!

Bob, I called the other day and ask for your recommendation on a good string for my upright bass. I was using the Supernills and hated the sound quality. You suggested the Eurosonic Lights and they are great.Love the sound and feel. Thanks You

Mark and Bob,

Just wanted to email you, to let you know what I think about your products and service...

=)

Got the eurosonic strings that my gf bought me, and at first I was not sold...I like the tension of the RB strings better, but the tone seemed good...

Called Mark the day after thanksgiving and ordered a Fishman Full Circle. I have to let you know that this pickup changed my life. It sounds amazing! I had a bassmax that I bought from you but never really worked with my bass (although now it is on my 1/2 ccb and it sounds really good)...I purchased a used *** and it sounded horrible. I was worried that the synthetic Eurosonics would produce too much squeak and buzz for a piezo. My amplified bass output to this point has been anemic and muffled.

Now, with the FC, my bass sounds amazing! The eurosonics sound amazing too! I love these strings...This pickup has made a world of difference, and I wanted to say thank you!

Jason (December 2012)
I just put the Eurosonics on my Merchant Vertical Bass-they sound and feel great, even compared to the Sonores Basso 2011s on my Pollmann. I have a feeling they would be just the thing for gut players who are tired of dealing with the tuning and maintenance issues.
