Description

Includes our exclusive Gollihur Music tipsheet to get the most out of your purchaseThis "reissue" of an "old" original formula rosin has developed a growing reputation - one of great quality and playability, and of of being worth every penny. Manufactured here in the USA, it has a median texture, leaning towards softness - not soft and "goopy" like some popular rosins, and not hard and flaky like others.

It is as similar as is practical to the original Wiedoeft formula from the 1950s and 1960s as possible, but made with modern upgrades to production to maximize quality and consistency - they even went through the trouble to design and create specific components and pouring equipment exclusive to the manufacture of this rosin.

Wiedoeft™ Bass Rosin is tested, cured, and put through strict quality controlled processes to ensure the finest quality. In our testing, the all-weather (original formula) gets a nice, but not overwhelming grip to it, requiring only a few smooth and easy glides to fully rosin the bow well. A little seems to go a long way! Tonally, it possesses a nice clarity without being harsh, and depth and warmth without being overly boomy. Of course, a lot depends on strings and technique. But it worked very nicely, and wasn't messy or flaky. Very impressed!

New for 2026, the "Ultra-Grip" grade of rosin is now available for a more aggressive option. Much stickier, more like some of the softer formulas from other manufacturers, it will give that "sizzle" and be particularly useful in colder climates (though I don't necessarily recommend it for use in the heat of summer.) We find it to not be necessarily "softer," in that it takes some effort to deform the block of rosin (though it can be done) - but rather more grippy. Our impression is that it seems to bring out the warmth of the basses we tried it on, though that may require further testing vs. the original formula to be sure.

The rosin comes in a unique square-shaped, silicon roll-down design which protects the quality regardless of climate. It has also been noted that the rosin has excellent shelf-life, and is resistant to drying out and crystallizing. Once used, the rosin will show a "continual wetting action" allowing for easy application to the hair of the bow, and minimal powdering on the strings and instrument.

Wiedoeft is packaged in a semi-airtight square silicon container, with each cake weighing approximately 42 grams (1.48 oz.)

NOTE: The manufacture and distribution of Wiedoeft Rosin is handled exclusively by the (newly formed) Wiedoeft Rosin company. It has no relationship to, and is neither made nor distributed by, the Kolstein Music Company.
