Description

Includes our exclusive Gollihur Music tipsheet to get the most out of your purchaseThis "reissue" of an "old" original formula rosin has developed a growing reputation - one of great quality and playability, and of of being worth every penny. Manufactured here in the USA, it has a median texture, leaning towards softness - not soft and "goopy" like some popular rosins, and not hard and flaky like others.

It is as similar as is practical to the original Wiedoeft formula from the 1950s and 1960s as possible, but made with modern upgrades to production to maximize quality and consistency - they even went through the trouble to design and create specific components and pouring equipment exclusive to the manufacture of this rosin.

Wiedoeft™ Bass Rosin is tested, cured, and put through strict quality controlled processes to ensure the finest quality. In our testing, the all-weather (original formula) gets a nice, but not overwhelming stickiness to it, requiring only a few smooth and easy glides to fully rosin the bow well. A little seems to go a long way! Tonally, it possesses a nice clarity without being harsh, and depth and warmth without being overly boomy. Of course, a lot depends on strings and technique. But it worked very nicely, and wasn't messy or flaky. Very impressed!

New for 2026, the "Ultra-Grip" grade of rosin is now available for a more aggressive option. Much stickier, more like some of the softer formulas from other manufacturers, it will give that "sizzle" and be particularly useful in colder climates (though I don't necessarily recommend it for use in the heat of summer.)

The rosin comes in a unique square-shaped, silicon roll-down design which protects the quality regardless of climate. It has also been noted that the rosin has excellent shelf-life, and is resistant to drying out and crystallizing. Once used, the rosin will show a "continual wetting action" allowing for easy application to the hair of the bow, and minimal powdering on the strings and instrument.

Wiedoeft is packaged in a semi-airtight square silicon container, with each cake weighing approximately 42 grams (1.48 oz.)

    Wiedoeft rosin

Posted by Dean Livelybrooks on Mar 4th 2026

As a string bassist French bowing since the 4th grade, this is my go-to rosin. It is fine enough to ‘skate’ when need be but has enough grip so that one can ‘dig in’ as needed.

    I tried them all…

Higher priced, lower priced, doesn’t matter, I’ve tried them all. This Wiedoeft rosin is hands down my favorite. I play arco 99% of the time and I find I get the best results for the least passes with the bow which is better for the hair and the sound. Even makes the natural bass EQ better to my ear. If you haven’t tried it…

    A cleaner alternative to pops

Posted by Billy Satterwhite on Nov 19th 2023

This rosin is great if you like pops but don’t like quite how messy pops gets. It’s sticky and grippy, but warms up a little slower than pops and doesn’t get “over grippy” as quick as pops can.

    Wiedoeft Bass Rosin

Posted by John Thornburg on Dec 7th 2022

Wow! It is twice the price of my usual rosin, but I really like it. Quick, smooth response and great tone. Very little dust. I will always have a cake of this in my kit.

Good Rosin, even if a little pricey

Posted by Evan Gerber on Jan 18th 2022

I tried this on a whim not expecting too much. Every other time I tried some "high end" or "boutique" rosin, I was generally not impressed and went back to Pops pretty quickly. But honestly this stuff is pretty great. It seems more stable than pops, less likely to melt/run. But still seems quite soft. It isn't brittle or powdery like some rosins. Goes on smooth, has great grip on the string, and sounds great. Also, I like the silicon case (Reminds me of the Kolstein case, but more flexible). And making rosin in a square cake just makes a lot of sense.
