Description

Includes our exclusive Gollihur Music tipsheet to get the most out of your purchaseThis new(er) bass rosin comes to us from Nashville, TN, USA. Here at the Gollihur shop, we find it to be a very smooth, surprisingly easy-playing rosin. It's deceptively so - you feel like you're not really getting a lot of "stick" on the hair, and yet the bow pulls solid, clear-sounding notes pretty effortlessly, without a lot of arm weight.

If you're someone who likes that super-sticky "Texas Sizzle" this rosin may not be for you; but I definitely found it surprising in how effective it is without feeling heavy or goopy. I'm no "Joe Arco" (as my dad, Bob, used to say about himself) but I found it easy to play with dynamics and quick strokes. I feel like this might be a great option for soloist bassists to have in their bag of tricks, it would likely work very well for fast passages and techniques that require more dexterity, where the sticker rosins might "hang up" too much.

It's also beautifully presented - a swell burlap bag contains a nice metal tin with a screw-on lid. Inside the tin, the rosin is encased in a cloth wrap, which is attached to the bottom of the rosin cake along with a small wood disc base/holder. All very nicely and elegantly done, and it even includes a nice sticker and a promotional card for the manufacturer.

Overall, I'm impressed with this rosin - would be a premium alternative to some of the more solid but smooth rosins like the purple-containered ones from Sweden, or so-called "hard" or "All-weather" rosins from some of our other premium brands.

Here is their own description:

Colonel Marsee's Bourbon Barrel Bass Rosin is a specially formulated rosin designed to meet the unique needs of double bassists. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this rosin combines the rich, complex flavors of bourbon barrel aging with a proprietary blend of ingredients tailored to enhance the bassist's performance. With its balanced grip and smooth application, this rosin ensures optimal string response, allowing bassists to produce a deep, resonant tone with ease. Whether performing intricate passages or laying down a solid foundation in an ensemble, Colonel Marsee's bourbon barrel bass rosin delivers the perfect blend of control, projection, and warmth, making it an indispensable tool for bassists seeking to elevate their sound to new heights.

Rosin is key in getting a good bowed sound, so don't cheap out on this key ingredient to success, it can last a long time - and isn't very expensive. In fact, some bassists carry two or three different cakes just in case the environment makes another consistency better for that particular situation. When the humidity is high, the more powdery, harder rosin is usually best, and during very dry periods some stickier stuff may be needed.

New players: I include my personal tip sheet covering the care and usage of rosin.
