Description
The NS Electric line was developed as a joint effort between Ned Steinberger and D'Addario Strings. Because volume is unlimited for electric instruments, NS Electric line focuses on tone and expressive nuance rather than acoustic power. It brings out the richest tone from any electric instrument, and work well for acoustic instruments when subtlety of expression is paramount.
NS Strings are mostly made with stranded steel cores wrapped with aluminum, brass, tungsten, nickel, and stainless steel. The line is designed for use with electric upright basses using NS Standard Double Bass string length.
The Bass Guitar/Bass cello (Omni Bass) strings are made to fit the OmniBass electric upright bass instruments (34" scale) from NS Design, as well as almost all standard 34-35 inch scale bass guitars. These expressive strings are polished smooth for an intimate feel, with rich bass tone and a clear, singing upper register.
Strings are sold as sets; D'Addario sells the strings in 4-string sets, with high C and low B strings to complete sets for extended-range instruments.
Here are the respective string gauges for the Omni Bass.
| Standard Tuning Strings (Gauge) | Tension (lbs) | ||
| Low B: | 2.40 mm | .095 inches | 31.3 |
| E: | 1.85 mm | .070 inches | 35.5 |
| A: | 1.40 mm | .055 inches | 35.5 |
| D: | 1.20 mm | .050 inches | 36.0 |
| G: | .95 mm | .040 inches | 35.4 |
| High C: | .75 mm | .030 inches | 36.0 |
These strings are made specifically for the NS Design OmniBass instruments, but they may fit other shorter scale instruments (in the 34" scale length range.) These strings may well fit many bass guitars, as well as a few small scale electric upright basses (see the user reviews section for at least one person who found success using these on a non-NS Design EUB).
So you don't have to "guess," we've included the dimension specs of the strings below, so you can compare them to the measurements of your instrument; it's key that you ensure that the "silked" ends do not cross over the bridge or nut of your instrument. Please remember that strings that have been put onto an instrument are NOT returnable, even if they don't fit - that's why we're taking the extra step to give you this specific information!
The length dimensions of these strings are as follows:
- 1" Ball end silk length (from ball end to playable area)
- 36" Playable portion (unsilked, wound section)
- 12.25" Pegbox end silk length
- w/approx 1" of transition between the thicker portion to the thinner, more flexible peg-wrapping section)

Warranty Information
We are sorry to hear of your experience. If you experience a problem with your strings (or string set), you may contact us (D'Addario) to see whether a manufacturing mishap is the cause. If you wish to return the string(s), visit http://www.daddario.com/ra. Please return the string or set in question in its original packaging (including corrosion intercept bag if possible). This will help us determine if a defect or other malfunction has occurred. Upon receipt and evaluation, if a manufacturing defect is revealed, we will quickly send you a replacement.
NOTE: Though it may not be the case in your situation, please keep in mind that premature string breakage is often caused by burrs or rough edges that develop at the nut or bridge/saddle. These rough edges are often difficult to see, but can be ruthless on strings. If your string continuously breaks at the nut or bridge, please check these points of contact for a nice, smooth surface. If burrs or rough edges are found, contact your local music shop or luthier to perform the necessary minor repair to resolve this common problem.

If you're thinking about them, get them
I recently purchased a weird '90s/'00s relic, a Zeta Crossover Bass, which is similar in concept to the NS these were made for. I was hesitant to buy these because they cost so much more than the totally serviceable D'Addario Chromes it came with, but I decided to go for it. What a difference! Lower tension greatly improves playability and left hand endurance, while making it feel more like a longer-scale instrument. The sweeter, warmer sound plays much nicer with a piezo pickup than Chromes, which have a lot of treble for flats (still love them in a magnetic setting). I also have to commend Gollihur for generally excellent resources and shopping experience, I was going to reach out to support to make sure these strings would work on my bass before I realized all my questions were thoroughly answered by an article already on their website. Also, at the time of purchase these were somehow like $50 cheaper than I'd pay from D'Addario directly. All around excellent product and buyer experience. Pleasantly surprised to see a business like this still open in the 2020s. I'll be back.
