Description
The core material of this string is a high-tensile "rope" made from carbon steel, which is then wound with chrome steel.
It is reportedly an outstanding set for arco, as it can withstand a powerful and heavy bowing arm. It has a brilliant sound with a short sustain, with great projection and "big tone volume." The strings are very stable and should be instantly playable. They have a very quick response, which is slightly quicker than Pirastro's Original Flat-Chrome.
Why the "Original" name? As I understand it, it’s basically a "New Coke" vs "Classic Coke" sort of story. The Flexocors were made for many years, and then suddenly "reformulated" in 1992, as a means to improve them. A fair number of players were not happy with the new reformulation and begged Pirastro to go back to the old formula. Those original formulation strings (the ones on this page) were re-released and re-branded as "Original Flexocors." But for the people who rather preferred the new version, they continued on as simply "Flexocors" (and are commonly, but unofficially, known as "Flexocor 92's").
The Original Flexocor have a somewhat brilliant sound, whereas the standard "Flexocor" strings have a more traditional arco orchestral vibe; a little more tempered so they aren't so brash under the bow.

Pirastro Original Fexocor-purple
This type of string has been around for at least 50 years because I remember them back in the 70s. They set the standard for bowed bass strings. They've been copied - and even almost replaced by Pirastro Flexocor 92s (red). Like the original Coke, bowing bassists just didn't like the 92s enough to let go of the purple originals. These are the most common strings used in major orchestra bass sections- and those players are picky
