Description

Thomastik Superflexible Double Bass Orchestra (Medium) Double Bass Strings have a braided steel thread core. For most players, the Superflexible are a "smoother" sounding steel, rope core string than the very popular Spirocores.

Includes our exclusive Gollihur Music tipsheet to get the most out of your purchaseRecently, some rockabilly-slap styled players have found that they like the solo gauge Superflexibles (we have those too!) -- while they are designed to be tuned one whole step up from standard strings, players "downtune" them for a "light" string option. For many, they're just a little bit harder to slap than non-metal strings, but for steel they're pretty easy on the fingers. They have a bit more "click" - but also more actual note - than plain gut or nylon, especially on the E and A; they will probably sound a little "twangy" until they break in (especially if you're used to gut or similar). But they're reported to have a long life, and they work quite well for "regular" pizz sound as well. And of course, these strings will work with a magnetic pickup like the Schaller (while gut or nylon won't).

From the Manufacturer:
The solid core has been replaced by a cable-type structure made up of braided steel threads. This reduces the string's stiffness, improving its elasticity.

Superflexible is incomparably responsive and its tone seems to literally radiate from the instrument, without the least harshness. Durability, tuning stability and purity of open fifths are unsurpassed.

Superflexible is a dependable all-round string for the discerning musician, at home with every type of bowing and in every musical situation.

Medium Superflexibles have blue thread at the bottom and top; the solo gauge has a yellow top with a blue bottom.

    Great economic alternative to spiros

Posted by Solly on Jul 1st 2026

I’ve had these for a couple weeks now on my laminate bass, which gets played outdoors/on a riverboat often. They’re doing great holding their tuning going from AC to 90+°F heat. They sound a lot like spiros with a little extra twang. They feel great too. I chose these to replace Zyex strings, which I got as I was developing slap technique. The rare occasions that I bring my carved bass with spiros out, I was getting tendonitis cause I had grown soft from the low tension synthetics. This is a nice balance of slappable steel.

Solid string for pizz and arco

Posted by Matthew Rybicki on Feb 16th 2023

I've used these for a few years on my Upton when I needed some more flexibility for pizza but also a strong arco sound. Especially useful for Broadway. Price is right and last forever

I've tried a number of different strings for my specialized applications. These are the best. They have great flexibility and a terrific tone.
