While cellos are a little outside our wheelhouse, they're members of the string family, so we're happy to provide these fine instruments for our "thinner-stringed" brethren (and "sistren?")
The solid-body NS Cello, is available in several different models and levels, all using a standard cello scale length, and compatible with just about any common set of standard cello strings. The professional, yet affordable CR Series is crafted of higher-end woods and features onboard active electronics. For those on a more modest budget, the NXTa Series offers excellent craftsmanship, with a scaled-back feature set to bring the price down. With either instrument, the NS Cellos can deliver a traditional cello tone, or can be electronically "altered" to explore new sonic territory.
Both versions are compatible with the many playing position options: A fully adjustable tripod stand can be used seated or standing. The optional end pin stand provides the seated cellist familiar points of thigh contact and position. The Frame Strap System allows the cellist to stand up with full mobility for a new experience of freedom and expression.
The CR model is available with 4, 5, or 6 strings, and the NXT can be had in either a 4 or 5 string model. The NXT is also available as a surprisingly playable FRETTED model, which brings a whole new dimension to the cello.

FeaturesSOLID MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The CR NS Cello is crafted of European maple, with a flame maple face. The NXT is also maple/maple, with a veneered top of flame maple (for the amber) or a plainer maple for the black finish. On both models, the traditional cello scale length and neck shape have a familiar feel, while the small body allows full access to the upper register, especially helpful on the extended range models. Solid construction provides structural stability to resist changes in temperature and humidity.
FINGERBOARD: The fingerboard is expertly graduated with an asymmetric profile, to ensure that each note is even and buzz free. An adjustable truss rod allows for precise relief adjustment for different strings and playing style. A cascading dot pattern across the neck provides an accurate reference for positon.
POLAR PICKUPS: The NS Cellos feature the Polar bridge-mounted piezo pickup system. The Polar pickups can sense either vertical or lateral string vibration. Set in the vertical mode, plucked notes are remarkably even and sustained. In the lateral mode, the pickup has unparalleled sensitivity in the direction of the bow, with more attack when plucked. Attack and decay can be effectively controlled with the Polar pickup system.
CR MODEL ACTIVE ELECTRONICS: The dual mode preamp allows the player to choose between two very distinct tone qualities. The first mode delivers the full frequency response of modern low impedance electronics, for a rich, full-blown "electric" sound. The second is balanced to produce the frequency response of the traditional cello, for a more "acoustic" sound. A threeway toggle switch allows the player to select the desired pickup and electronics options. Additional controls include volume and individual bass EQ & treble EQ controls.
NXTa ELECTRONICS & CONTROLS: The NXTa does not have an onboard "preamp," but does feature a flash-rechargeable active buffer circuit, so no batteries are required -- and the instrument maintains compatibility with "standard" amps that may not sound as good with unbuffered high-impedance pickups. This buffer is bypassable if you forget to recharge the instrument. Volume control and Tone control (treble roll off).
PORTABILITY: The padded tubular gig bag is only 100 cm (40") long and 18 cm (7") in diameter, and weighs 4.6 kg (10 lbs) with the instrument and tripod stand. A storage area inside the gig bag has room for accessories.
The Straight Dope: What are the differences between the new NXT and CR cello models?The NXTa cello uses a passive pickup, which does not require a battery - but does have a buffering circuit for maximum amplifer compatibility. CR cello has an active preamp powered by an on-board battery, and offers more control over tone. The NXTa can easily be plugged directly into an amplifier with good results, and many amplifiers provide enough tone shaping in the preamp section (tone controls). Both instruments use NS Design's Polar Pickup technology.
The CR and NXTa cellos both have maple necks and bodies and ebony fingerboards. The ebony on the CR-series is a higher grade (darker). The CR-series has carved top cap of figured maple on body face; the NXTa uses a figured maple veneer.
The CR tripod is double braced steel. The NXTa has tubular tripod. Both are very sturdy and stable.
The tuners on the CR-series are made by higher-grade than the proprietary ones on the NXTa.
Only the CR cello is available as a 6 string. NS Design does not have a NXTa 6-string cello planned at this time.
NS Design will cover all defects in material and workmanship for five years for the CR Series, three years for the NXT Series, and two years for the WAV series from the date of purchase. We will repair or replace, at our option, any instrument or part thereof which is found by us to be defective. This warranty includes the tuning hardware, electronics, pick-up systems, truss rod, bridge, fingerboard, neck and stand. This warranty does not include replacement of strings or batteries, or wear to potentiometers, the fingerboard, or surface finish. Problems resulting from disassembly, modification, customization, or repair by anyone without prior authorization from NS Design are not covered by this warranty. We assume no liability other than for the actual repair of the instrument to playable condition within our specifications. This is our sole warranty, and it includes all warranties, whether expressed or implied. You may have specific warranty legal rights which vary from state to state.View AllClose
