Description

We used to carry a (once very popular) "Professional" bass bag, years ago, which was a step up in padding and durability from our (still very popular) Gollihur Bass Bag. While our Gollihur gig bag is very solid and useful for "weekend warriors" and those who play out occasionally, a player who is hitting the pavement several times a week might just see the appeal in a bag with a more rugged design spec -- something designed for a true professional player.

Those "Pro" bags aren't available anymore, and we've been looking for a replacement for some time. As it turned out, the answer was literally in our back room! Sam was recently in the midst of a move, and he stored some of his music gear in the warehouse for a few days to avoid having it mishandled by movers. I got a look at the bag he's been using on his bass (for years) and asked him about it; as it turns out, it's by Protec - a company that I already do business with!

Protec specifically says that this bag is "designed for professionals." I concur. It has a durable, weather-resistant ballistic nylon exterior, with a thickly padded structure. I've always been a fan of dense, closed-cell foam for bass cases, not the pillowy fiber-fill stuff that's good for ornamental pillows (but not so great for impact protection). And this bag has the stuff - when you squeeze it, the padding feels like a 20mm thick wetsuit, like neoprene (I don't know exactly what kind of foam it actually is, but it's got that kind of density).

It's got (count 'em!) six exterior handles, many with rubber grips, for all of your "wrangling" needs - like struggling to get it into a hatchback. One of my favorite features is the convenient bow pocket -- which includes a removable, soft two-bow case that has stiffener strips in it for structure. It's got a dedicated opening for the endpin to extend through, as well as a few skid-patches on the bottom to prevent wear-through. All zippers are strong and confidence-inspiring, and they feature rubber-covered pulls for comfort and anti-scratching concerns. Finally, there are three exterior pockets for easy access to sheet music and accessories.

It's a sweet bag.

    Fine for occasional use

Posted by Brent on Dec 31st 2023

TLDR: Fine for occasional use, for those regularly gigging/transporting, seek an upgrade. I'm rating this as a 3 of 5 stars because overall this case is decent. While it does have more padding that a dust cover, the padding is rather minimal. Also while it includes a soft bow case that fits two bows, my hard-shell bow case for two bows does not fit in the bow sleeve. Overall for this price point I was disappointed and will be returning it for a more padded option.

    Great Bag!

Posted by Keith D. on Dec 17th 2022

I received this as an early Christmas present. (Yes, I helped choose it, LOL) It replaced a 20 rear old TKL bag that was well loved. Fits my Englehardt great. Nice, medium level of foam, provides good protection, but not so stiff that it's awkward to pack, and not floppy. Stitching seem very well done. A very affordable step up from the budget bag Mark offers. The large bow case was one deciding factor in choosing this bag. The reinforced dual bow case provides decent protection and the pocket on the front of the bag is big enough to fit my bow hard case, with it's rosin pocket. The pockets hold every thing you might need (More stuff in them, more weight to carry) The back center pocket with it's built in pencil loops and misc inner zippered pouch are a nice touch. One thing to note, If you put a bulky item in the back center pocket and then lay the case down on it's back to insert or remove the bass, it will high center on that pocket and rock around as you zip/un-zip the case. All in all, I like the end peg through it's own opening and not using the zipper from both sides to secure it, so I'll take putting the bass in the bag on it's back vs on it's side. I've used it several times this week already. Get one!

    Very nice bag

Posted by Matthew Drasner on Sep 28th 2021

Great padding and seems like it has a quality zipper. Very sturdy handles and plenty of pockets. The double bow case is a nice touch as well. I hope that the padding keeps it shape for a long time - hard to tell at this point. This bag seems to be a very good value for the price.

Love it! Much nicer and stronger fabric and more than adequate padding than I expected.

A great reliable bag that has served me for years!

Posted by Sam Harasink on Nov 17th 2020

I bought this bag to protect my bass when I first got it almost eight years ago now. Since then I’ve upgraded the strings, endpin, fingerboard, pickup, and bridge all at least once. The only accessory I started out with that I’ve never wanted to change was this case. It has been a valiant protector of my bass since the beginning, and it’s still going strong. Whether it be running through a thunderstorm to get to a gig, or having a bass amp fall on it while driving on the highway, I’m always reassured that my bass will be safe. This case is rock solid and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants that extra layer of protection, or is a tad bit clumsy like me.
