Description
The core material of this string is a high-tensile rope made from carbon steel which is wound with chrome steel. It is a very good all-around orchestral string, as it has a very familiar and typical warm bowed tone with a quick response and short sustain. Very stable string with very short break-in.
Why are they sometimes called "Flexicore 92s?" As I understand it, it’s basically a "New Coke" vs "Classic Coke" sort of story. The Flexocors were made for many years, and then suddenly "reformulated" in 1992, as a means to improve them. A fair number of players were not happy with the new reformulation and begged Pirastro to go back to the old formula. Those old formula strings we re-released as "Original Flexocors" - but some people rather preferred the new version, which were continued as simply "Flexocors" (and are commonly, but unofficially, known as "Flexocor 92's").
The Original Flexocor have a somewhat brilliant sound, whereas the standard "Flexocor" strings have a more traditional arco orchestral vibe; a little more tempered so they aren't so brash under the bow.
