Description

This is a big step up from one of those rubber thingies that you hang in your bass (we have those, too).

The Boveda system is considerably more advanced than those. For one, it's a two-way system - meaning, it doesn't just humidify, but rather maintains an optimal humidity level, protecting from both too MUCH moisture as well as too LITTLE. Boveda uses a patented, all natural, salt solution to precisely protect musical instruments from over- and under-humidification. Boveda is the world's first 2-way humidity control.

Each Boveda consists of a specially prepared saturated solution of pure water and natural salts. This saturated solution is contained within a water-vapor permeable "reverse osmosis" membrane. Boveda provides the cleanest and most purified humidity of all other products available on the market today.

Do you need it, though?

That's the real question, isn't it? Truthfully, if you have a laminated (plywood) bass, probably not. Unless humidity swings where you live are extreme, the more durable nature of a laminate bass is unlikely to make humidity a major concern, though you should still always be prudent (especially with fast changes). However, if you have a carved or hybrid (carved top), maybe. Please see my FAQ on the topic, in our resources section, for more details on the need for -- and useful tips for -- humidification for your bass.

Important

You should be aware that this type of product (as well as the rubber sponge tubes) WILL ONLY PROTECT YOUR INSTRUMENT WHILE IT'S STORED IN A CASE. If you keep your bass out in the open air, this sort of product won't do anything useful. In that case, I strongly recommend a whole house humidifier (especially if you have forced-air heat) or a room humidifier with a built-in humidistat to prevent over-humidifying (used in a room where you keep the door closed.)

So, maybe you're lucky enough to own a couple basses - this sort of product is probably best used for a carved instrument that you usually keep in a case for safe-keeping, and only bring out for special occasions.

Boveda's 2-way humidity control technology automatically protects your wooden instrument against warping, cracks and other damage caused by lack of humidification or too much humidification. Boveda maintains a constant 40%-50% relative humidity level within your instrument's (closed) case.

  • Absorbs excess humidity if needed
  • Adds or removes moisture based on temperature
  • Won’t over humidify, preventing mold
  • No maintenance or refilling
  • No activation required
  • Proximity & direct contact won’t damage the instrument
  • Emits purified water vapor

The standard Starter Package includes 4 large 70 gram Boveda packs and 2 leak-resistant fabric holders. The refill packs can be purchased separately as needed. Typically lasts between 2-5 months in a seasoned case (see included instructions for what that means, but basically they suggest pre-treating the case if it's made of wood, which is not very common for upright basses. Replace with refill packs when Boveda becomes rigid. Longevity depends on time of year, case quality and ambient RH levels.
